Pet Portraits By Patricia Bourque

Because of the deeply unique bond between people and their animals, when I get asked to do a portrait, I really appreciate, along with the photographs, having a written description of the pet – it can be something about their personality or their look or just the way the owner feels about their companion. I generally prefer taking my own photographs…I like to take a minimum of at least 75 photos and that way, even though I don’t get to spend a lot of time with the dog (or other pet), when I lay out all the photos I begin to see definite patterns of personality that come through. It also adds to the sentiment of the painting if you would like to include other elements of your life, for example your home or part of it in the background. A simple line drawing sketch is the first step after receiving photographs – in particular it will make clear the look of the dog and the position and background. Once that is received by the customer and approved, I begin the painting. My prices vary according to what is required, but generally go like this…. $275.00 To take the photographs, to cover developing costs and includes the sketch. Travel expenses are covered separately. If you are supplying your own photographs (and the more and better they are, of course the better the portrait will be – although I like to think I do my very best every time) there is a charge of $150.00 to do the preparatory work for and including the sketch. At this point I will give you a choice of 2 or 3 sizes and prices to choose from. Upon acceptance and return of the signed sketch, a deposit of 1/3 of the agreed upon price is required. And I begin the painting. I like to keep in close contact with the people I am working for – thank goodness for e mail! While painting portraits is one of the ways with art that I earn my living, it is not just ‘another business’. It’s a unique relationship between the artist, the owner and the pet… and having had pets of my own that I cherished but that have passed on and one presently that I deeply love, I truly understand the special privilege of being chosen to do such a portrait.
