Gene Canning, born in 1964, has always been an avid outdoors man. His knowledge of nature enables him to recreate detailed realistic interpretations of the outdoors. "when I was a child, I used to love looking through my Dad's hunting magazines. I was fascinated by paintings of such fine artists as Robert Abbett, Bob Kuhn, and Olgden Pleissner. They could capture a whole story in that one painting. I hope that when someone looks at one of my painting that I'm able to stir a fond memory within them, to preserve that moment in time." Mr. Canning specializes in Sporting Dogs, but also enjoys painting a variety of wildlife, birds, landscapes, and more recently, the people of rural Ontario. |

Basically self taught, most of his techniques have been formed through a combination of watching, reading, and of course many hours of practice. Gene surrounds himself with art and nature. Weekends, he can often be found with his three dogs, Meyer, Gilligan, and Taz, wandering his 100 acre property, dreaming up his next painting. Most of the landscapes used in his paintings can be found in his own backyard which includes three ponds, a stream, a hardwood forest, and a lot of very rocky terrain. Gene is an avid conservationist. As well as supporting his own mini eco system he donates regularly to many conservation groups such as Ducks Unlimited, Federation of Anglers and Hunters, World Wildlife Fund, and Save the Osprey. Gene is quickly becoming one of Canada's premier artists. In 2000 PBS television produced a 1/2 hour documentary on his art. He has also been featured by such television stations as CBS, ABC, and City TV. One of Gene's paintings is now part of Canada's State Art Collection. This painting presently hangs at Rideau Hall, the official home of Canada's Governor General. In 2000 Gene was nominated as OFAH's Artist of the Year. Also, in June, Gene was fortunate enough to go on an African Safari with a group of artists. "Africa has always been a dream trip for me. To have had the opportunity to go with a group of fellow artists, all with a common interest was really exciting." Gene Canning's art is self published and distributed. His collector plates are published and distributed in Canada by N.C. Cameron and Son's Ltd. In the United States, by Gene" then go into the words that are already there. Gene's artwork can be found in private, public, and corporate collections throughout the world, including the United States, Japan, and Australia. Gene presently lives with his wife and two children near the small community of Havelock, Ontario. Gene has been reconstructing a one hundred and forty year old log house on his property to be used as a studio/gallery. "It will be an unbelievable studio when it's done. PBS Television has produced a documentary on Gene Canning which was followed by interviews by both CBS and NBS television. He is currently featured in "Who's Who in Canada" and will also appears in the 2003 edition of "Who's Who in Executives and Professionals".
