Unlike lithographic prints, created with high tech printing presses, and Giclee prints, made using computer technology, the prints featured by Hanfstaengl Publishing of Germany are completely hand crafted following their reproduction process established in 1833.  This series of artwork is being reproduced today exactly as the original reproductions Meyer-Eberhardt and Thomas Blinks were when they first appeared in the early 20th century.

Each print is created on heavy 340 pound handmade watercolor paper with wide deckled edges. The paper's color ranges from a soft white to a creamy ecru tone and the image is centered with a generous border as displayed in the framed version of the print.  The etching images average 9" by 11" and are showcased on the handmade paper sheet approximately 15" by 20".  The specific size of the etching and paper are shown on each individual print page.

Today, as five hundred years ago, the copper plate is still carefully re-inked by hand then cleaned with wide-meshed gauze balls. Only when the ink lies deeply in the impressions will the print possess the velvety tones and fragile lines so characteristic of the old, valuable engravings.

The print is produced by pressing the plate under the press roller with a pressure of around 16 tons. For every single print this entire procedure has to be repeated.  To a greater extent than wooden engravings, the artistic quality of etchings and copper engravings is dependent on the craftsman's skills and the aesthetic sensitivity of the printer.

This special way of printing has been done by Hanfstaengl Publishers since 1833. Through the precise application and removal of ink, careful consideration of paper, and the use of the hand press, these printing specialists create a precious original artwork with every print. 

Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt (1895 - 1977) and Thomas Blinks (1853 - 1910) show classic 20th century art styles and are the forefathers to modern canine artists.  Any of their prints will be a delightful addition to your art collection.
