John Grant Smithson began working with Pen & Ink 
during the early seventies, beginning with line renderings
of old Victorian homesteads and historic buildings in and 
about his native city of Auckland, in New Zealand.

From this simple beginning he developed a technique 
which combined both line and pointillism for the production 
of larger works, including local farming landscapes which 
were up to six feet in length and which literally took weeks to execute.

In 1974, he began work on a Series of portraits of elderly Maori women, producing 
over 50 pieces in under a year. These were included in various exhibitions throughout 
the Waikato Region, and in Auckland, with several pieces selected for exhibition by 
the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington.

John completed a two-year Certification Course in Graphic Design at the 
Auckland Technical Institute, graduating in 1976. In 1978 he joined the 
New Zealand Cat Fancy and began breeding and registering cats. By 1984 
he had joined the Judging Program and became New Zealand's
youngest All Breed Judge, culminating with his election to the National Executive 
and eventual Presidency in 1992. This consuming hobby has also taken him all over the
world. He now combines his ardent love of animals and his 26 years experience 
as a pointillist, to produce original works in Pen & Ink, for lovers of Cats, Dogs and all
forms of Wildlife.

In recent years, while residing in the United States, John conducted classes in the 
Pointillist technique using Pen & Ink, while gathering new material for a future series of
original works.
